Humility | Philippians 2:3

Scripture | Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves. Philippians 2:3

Observation | In this passage, the Lord commands us to have a humble mindset and to value others above ourselves. Here Paul reflects on his coming death and expresses his desire to be with Jesus, all the while he still recognizes that it is better for him to labor in this life for the sake of believers (v. 24-25). The passage goes on to describe Christ’s humility as our example (v. 5-11). While it’s easy to get caught up in the beautiful theological implications of this passage, there is also a powerful application for our daily lives. We live in a culture that exalts self, and as believers it is easy to fall into the same way of thinking and living. It is easy to fall into the trap of putting our own plan and interests above others and above God.

Application | How often do my thoughts and desires revolve around self instead of others? How often do my actions? Not that I prioritize others in sin or error, but out of a god glorifying selfless love.

Prayer | Heavenly Father, please give me the strength to resist the temptation to prioritize my own interests and desires over the needs of others and your will for our lives. Help me to be humble and to regard others as more important than myself. Let me follow the example of my Savior and Lord. May my words and deeds serve your purposes and bring glory to your name. Amen.
