Godliness | 1 Thessalonians 2:10-12

Scripture | 1 Thessalonians 2:10–12 “You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers; just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.”

Observation | As Paul called out ungodly character in 1Thessalonians 2:4-7 (in this devotional), especially regarding those who “speak” God’s word, now he gives a glimpse of the godly character that should be expected. Devotion, righteousness, and blamelessness are the examples he had set along with Silvanus and Timothy. This text teaches a lesson to remember. Our godly living, or lack thereof, will verify or nullify our witness of the Word of God. As His people, our godly living either exalts Him or tarnishes His name.

Secondly, we see evidence pointed to in the work of “exhorting and encouraging and bearing witness.” Paul did not flatter and speak empty words as a man pleaser. Instead like a father he worked for the maturity of his friends. This includes both speaking comfort that encourages, accountability that bears witness, and exhorts by pointing to both the promises and commands of God. The lesson here is like the our devotional, that faithful Christians will not come across like salesman and charlatans, but fathers who both comfort and discipline those whom they love.

Third, we see a goal for godly character for one another. A goal of maturity in a life of faith and obedience. Walking, or living, in a way that God is worthy of. This is true living. Living for God’s glory.

Application | If I were taken to court for my faith, would I be found to be living devoutly towards God? Would my life be “upright” and “blameless” in the matters of God’s Word? Do I respond to loving Christian rebuke with a desire to grow, or a defensive, blaming, inability to accept biblical correction? Do I give father like exhortation to others to lead them to live their life in a way God is worthy of? Who do I need to start accepting correction from? Who do I need to lovingly and gently correct?

Prayer | Father keep me from the temptation of these men and living for their approval. Make my will and my work to be for your glory along. So that I would behave godly towards others and verify the truth of your word as I speak it to others as well. Father that I may never be a stumbling block because of ungodliness and so that all who you call into your kingdom and glory would live in a way you’re worthy of. Let me live for You and Your glory alone. Amen
