S.Scripture | For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is sufficient for these things? 17For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ. 2 Corinthians 2:15–17
O.Observation | First, notice that “we,” those who are truly saved by Jesus Christ and following His Lordship, are “a fragrance of Christ to God.” This is sacrificial language. In the Old Testament temple lambs were slaughtered and then burnt as fragrant sacrifices offered to God. Believers are called to be living sacrifices, in view of God’s mercy (Romans 12:1-2). To our heavenly Father the aroma of our sacrifice, is as sweet as the sacrifice of Christ for those who trust in Jesus. We are “a fragrance of Christ to God.”
Trusting in Christ as both Savior and Lord gives a distinct “aroma” to one’s life. When we both have the confident hope of eternal life and walk the ancient paths of His will and ways. We “smell” different, because we are different. To those who are saved, our position as children of God and practice of godly living smells like “life.” It encourages, calls others to the ancient paths, and gives hope in the glory of God. To those perishing, such faith and holy living rank of “death.” It condemns their rejection and rebellion of the King of all, whose will and ways have been revealed in scripture.
Sadly, many “believers” do all they can to rescue God from the offensive odor that is created from living a godly life in a godless world. Thus, they do as men always have and “peddle” a version of faith that is not “sincere.” In so doing they are in danger of being friends of the world, who James says are enemies of God (James 4:4).
A.Application | How do I try to hide or remove the offensive aroma of the Lord’s ancient paths of living? Of trusting Him and living a holy life that pleases Him? How can I more unashamedly embrace the Word as it is, instead of feeling the need to peddle it and soften what God has not? Even when it offends me? Even when it offends others? How can I live in a way of boldness following the Lord’s ancient paths that shine the love and the light of Christ?
P.Pray | Father, forgive me for shrinking back from what I fear will offend. I confess in my flesh I’ve chosen to offend you so as not to offend people. I’ve not spoken truth and not glorified you when I had opportunity. Forgive me because of your Son Jesus and work in me an obedience and trust that lives for your glory alone. Amen.
