Ephesians 2:6-7

S.Scripture | and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:6–7

O.Observation | We were dead in sin and He made us who are saved alive with Christ (v.5). Now we are taught in the past tense still that we have been raised with Jesus. Many have understood this as the “first resurrection” (Rev 20:6). I find this fitting as those who have been raised with Christ “the second death has no authority.” Further, we are taught that we are already seated with Jesus “in the heavenly places (Eph 2:6).” That is in the spiritual realm. Revelation 20:6 is parallel again here as it also teaches we will “reign with Him.” This is an already, not yet reality. Already we reign with Christ in the spiritual realm, not yet do we reign with Him in the physical world. That day will come. Here we see the teaching of the Kingdom of God already, but not yet.

What is the purpose of this? “So that” tells us in Ephesians 2:7. God’s purpose is to reveal His “surpassing riches of His grace and kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” The result? His glory!

A.Application | If I am truly in Christ, I am dead to the world an the flesh. How am I living in what I am dead to? If I am raised and given new life in Christ, and I rule with Him now, what pattern of living and thinking out to characterize my life? How do I need to redirect my life to His ancient paths?

Do I live in response to His surpassing kindness? Do I live to glorify Him? Today how can I bring him praise and glory? By studying scripture. By praying more. By doing all things without grumbling and complaining. By doing all things for His glory alone.

P.Prayer | Father, align my heart and mind with the reality of what you have done for me in Christ. Teach me to walk in newness of life according to your grace and your Word. Show me my need to repent and turn me in grace to walk in the everlasting way. All because of and all for you and your glory alone. Amen!
